Soapstone Carvings

As you can see, these are NOT carvings …but they are of stone – collected almost everywhere I go! Each little (or not so) stone is carefully selected and placed so that the finale character stands on its own …in perfect balance – no glue. The process of placement so that they will remain durably upright can be very meditative, and provide a little time to stop in the middle of a crazy, frenetic day and calm your spirit.

The inspiration for these figures comes from a rafting trip in the Yukon arctic and my introduction to the ancient stone structures called “Inuksuit” built by the native Inuit travelers of the treeless high north to relay messages. For thousand of years, stones have been assembled into various kinds of structures that can be seen for long distances and tell where to find good hunting, fishing, cached food and other vital information for survival.

I leave my favorite assembled, reminding me always of that most amazing adventure in the north.

Each Stone Puzzle comes in a neat little muslin or burlap string-bag so you can easily take them with you anywhere.

Since your puzzle arrives as …well …a little bag of stones, I’ll include a photo to refer to when you begin to reassemble your character. It’s important to move each stone around on it’s neighbor as you work …until they sort of slip into balance – the rest is up to you!
