Concrete & Bronze Reliefs

Many salmon and owl habitats are under pressure from poorly managed development and resource use. The subjects of this piece are the for-runners at risk of losing the battle for habitat protection; they are the well known/publicized players, but represent whole ecosystems in need of greater wisdom about the way we live with other species.

This is a concrete casting from the soapstone original. The surface is treated with layered stains and colored wax. There are many options for mounting the piece – in this case, weathered Cedar board with Bear-grass bundles. The stone “beads” holding the bundles together are actually the larval casings of a couple of Caddisflies who had recently hatched and left their beautifully constructed little aquatic homes behind.
